The higher the karat rating, the higher the proportion of gold in the piece of jewelry. For example, 24 karat (24K) gold has more gold content than 14K gold and is considered .9999% pure. But because 24K gold is soft, it’s usually mixed with other metals to increase its hardness and durability.

18K jewelry contains 18 parts of gold or is 75% pure. The gold is mixed in throughout with 6 parts of base metal.
14K jewelry contains 14 parts of gold or is 58.333% pure. The gold is mixed in throughout with 10 parts of base metal.
10K jewelry contains 10 parts of gold or is 41.666% pure. The gold is mixed in throughout with 14 parts of base metal.

There’s a big difference between karat-gold, gold filled, and gold-plated jewelry. Gold-plated contains a layer of at least 10K gold bonded to a base metal. The value of the gold in these articles is insignificant and should not be sent to us for analysis and refining.

Platinum Jewelry can be called “Platinum“ only if the item is at least 95% pure. Jewelry manufactured with a lower metal content, must have the quality identified such as 850Plat or in other words, the item is 85% pure. Platinum jewelry can be manufactured at purity levels as low as 50%.

Sterling Jewelry contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% alloy.

Jewelry may also contain mixed metals, that is unsoldered clasps stamped with a karat gold marking and the unmarked product itself manufactured with a lesser or greater gold content than the component attached to the item. Other jewelry may contain a combination of sterling and gold. In most cases, these items will be stamped with the two quality designators and registered trademark.

All items stamped with a quality mark must by law have the manufacturers trademark also stamped and clearly legible.

Just because an item of jewelry has a quality stamp, it is not necessarily real. There are many disreputable sellers of jewelry who can easily place a high purity stamp into a lower quality piece of jewelry.

Remember, although many items may possess a fineness stamp, professional testing of the product is the only accurate way to determine the actual fineness and value of the material.
